The Caremom app is a project I worked on during my mentorship program at She Code Africa. This app is focused on making the pregnancy journey a stress-free one, with its features carefully selected to solve problems pregnant women face because most times they don’t know enough.

Project Overview

This app connects pregnant women to the closest medical centers to them for antenatal appointments and general care. It also connects pregnant women to blood banks closest to them, with the right blood type, at the right time in cases of emergency. This app makes the pregnancy journey easier — as it educates the pregnant woman on safety measures/health tips to abide by during the duration of the pregnancy, workout plans and healthy meal plans to ensure the pregnant woman is healthy throughout the pregnancy.

The tool used: Figma

My Role

  • UX Research
  • Sketching
  • Low -fi Wireframing

  • Prototyping

User Story

Mrs. Gabrielle just moved to a new city after getting married to her Prince Charming. 10 months later, she realizes she is pregnant. As a first time mum, with little or no knowledge about pregnancy, antenatal appointments, and the likes Mrs. Gabrielle is stranded. This is also coupled with the fact that her Mum is far away.

How can I help Mrs. Gabrielle and many other women who might be facing this same challenge?

Your guess is as good as mine..I’ll design an app.

What are the issues I seek to solve with my app?

Features

  • This app will be able to connect pregnant women to the nearest medical centers and blood banks with the right blood type at the right time.
  • Book an antenatal appointment.
  • It will educate pregnant women on safety measures/health tips to live by during their pregnancy period.
  • It will have a pregnancy calculator to calculate the estimated due date.
  • Pregnancy workout plans.
  • Healthy meal plans.

My Target Users

First-time mothers and pregnant women who find themselves in a new city as the app is easy to use and educational at the same time.

The Problem

  • The first-time mother needs all the help she can get ranging from the do’s and don’ts during pregnancy, to exercises, etc during her first pregnancy. It is also very strenuous and time-consuming to book antenatal appointments physically at the hospital.
  • Pregnant women in new cities find it hard to get hospitals for their antenatal appointments as they are not conversant with the area.
  • The need to adequately prepare for delivery.
  • The need to stay healthy and fit during the duration of the pregnancy as this weighs badly on the health of the mother if taken for granted.
  • Many pregnant women make mistakes that can be avoided because they don’t know better.

Solution

With the app pregnant women should be able to do the following:

  • Find medical hospitals closest to them to relieve them of the stress of booking appointments physically.
  • Find blood banks closest to them with the right blood type, at the right time in cases of emergency.
  • Find embedded workout and healthy meal plans to ensure all-round health during pregnancy.
  • Get answers to frequently asked questions.
  • Calculate due-date to ensure adequate preparation for the delivery date.
  • Track pregnancy with the calendar.

Wire-framing

Low-fi Wire-Framing

After so many iterations I made a sketch and came up with these low-fi wireframes. Now I have a more visual understanding of what my app will look like.

Color

I wanted a feminine feel to the app so I choose these three colors as it most appealing to women. After some research, I found that colors that evoked most maternity and babies were pale and soft, as they convey tenderness and infantility, but also calmness. By combining them, they come together to become an attractive palette that gives a touch of elegance and femininity.

Typography

I wanted fonts that look round and bouncy, to stay in line with the cozy and gentle atmosphere. I used Poppins throughout the app.

Visual Design/Final Design

Visual Design for Caremom app

Using UI design elements, inspiration from similar apps, and also delving into my creatives juices I came up with this design. I can’t forget to mention that my Mentor Esther James helped me so much during the design stage.

Conclusion

Not exclusively was this task intriguing because it showed me a great deal about pregnancy, yet additionally because it is such an extraordinary and explicit subject. Conceiving an offspring is an exceptionally unique second in a lady’s life and it includes extraordinary feelings yet, also, solid physical repercussions. Chipping away at this exceptionally human point in an advanced manner was both intriguing and testing. I’m grateful to She Code Africa for this amazing experience.

Hope you enjoyed reading my case study. I’ll like to know what your thoughts are. Kindly leave feedback. Thanks.
